Alderman Anthony Smith

Anthony Smith is the 7th Ward Alderman of Calumet City, IL. Born and reared on the south side of Chicago, Anthony moved to Calumet City in August 2000 to raise his family. Prior to being elected,  he served our City in multiple areas which  include serving the Calumet City Youth Organization (CCYO – 4 year Coach) and the City’s Zoning Board of Appeals (’09-’12).  In 2013, he ran for City Treasurer and was elected as the 7th Ward Alderman in April 2017 serving to present.  Smith possess over 25 years of diverse experience in IT support and management in infrastructure and financial systems in the public and private sectors. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Chicago State University along with various professional certifications. Alderman Smith serves as the Chairman of the city’s License and Permit Committee and shares membership in both the Ordinance and Resolution Committee along with the Health, Welfare, and Education Committee. As Alderman, Smith has focused primarily on economic development issues with workforce development for residents while working to attract new, emerging industries for better jobs within the city.  Since 2017, his accomplishments include:
  1. Providing COVID-19 testing and relief to residents since the start of the pandemic.
  2. Sponsoring the Public Safety Ordinance to improve public safety in large retail areas with business accountability.
  3. Proposing the New Calumet City Economic Development website (http://developcalumetcity.com/) to market the City and attract better economic opportunities for growth.
  4. Co-Sponsoring the New Signage Ordinance to improve citywide business areas with quality illuminated signs.
  5. Passing balanced City budgets each without fee or tax increases or layoffs prior to the COVD pandemic.
  6. Passing Tax Increment Financing initiatives citywide including River Oaks, 159th St., Sibley Blvd., and Burnham Ave. for economic revitalization and growth.
  7. Offering free IT training to residents for better jobs and career opportunities with Krimson Technology, LLC.
  8. Providing Property Tax Appeal and Legal Workshops to help residents reduce property taxes and protect their estates.
  9. Promoting Public Safety improvements with hiring more police with enhanced technologies and advocating community policing and regular participation in the City’s Neighborhood Watch Beat Meetings twice a month.
  10. Providing Food and Energy Assistance to over 500 families each year and back to school supplies to families. 
  11. Proposing the Wilder Foods Indoor farm at the old Target store offering 100+ freshly grown, pesticide-free vegetables produced to consumers along with 80 local jobs and education opportunities. ($50 million investment).
  12. Proposing the NRG Renewable Energy Initiative to offer clean, affordable renewable energy to residents with jobs, workforce development, manufacturing, and energy independence opportunities. ($300 million investment for economic development)
  13. Supporting the Calumet City’s Gaming Proposal to attract the Southland Casino to Calumet City. ($275 million investment)
  14. Attracting and retaining more businesses including: Advantage Toyota, Wilder Foods, DD’s Discount, WOW Furniture, Missionary Dispensary, and 79th St. BBQ Restaurant (Coming to Applebees in ’21)
  15. Supporting policies and practices to enhance racial diversity across city hiring, services, and contractual services.
